I'm very glad I found this post. I recently read a comment where someone mentioned jaffa cakes. Here's the thing: I don't have a clue what those are.

So, Bron, would you please explain to this ignorant North American what a jaffa cake is?

Thanks.

Hi there Rob,

Jaffa Cakes are the quintessential UK junk food, hehe.
McVities is THE brand, basically they're a sponge drop, (a soft biscuit/cookie sized sponge cake) with an orange flavoured jam and then half dipped in chocolate to seal in the jam.
Wikipedia has more here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaffa_Cakes
hope this helps!

Wow! Is this shop new? I never came across it when I was living in Chch last year. I do remember a shop selling lots of English things on Colombo Street - Bird's Custard Powder and the like. Too close to home for me!

Yep 'tis pretty new I think Caroline.
Ahhh yes you must mean 'Johnson's Grocers' on Colombo? An interesting store that one, amazes me how he can find anything in there, organised chaos I guess, hehehe
