Like you I've never seen a truffle. I think I tasted truffle oil once but between you and me ... I couldn't see what the big deal was. Maybe it wasn't very good truffle oil.

I'd definitely like to try the real thing though ... one day.

Hi Bron, great writing. I would never spend so much money on a white truffle but imagine several years ago I was with the famous cook and vinegar-maker Cesare from Albaretto della Torre /Piemonte and his dog in the early morning fog looking for white truffles. I was on the occasion of taking a film about Piemonte and maybe you have already seen some pics from then in my blog. It was fascinating to watch the interact between the trifulau and his dog and whenever we entered a trattoria the air was filled with the scent of fresh truffles. I can state that I can live without them but to experience the hype and the myth around it was great. If you don`t mind that it is commented in German I gladly send you a copy of the film. Have a good weekend, even if there is winter with you ! But a wintery weekend has wonderful sides, with and without truffles.... angelika

Thanks Bron! You're very kind to my little book - I owe you a truffle when I've got some spare - still only found the one, sadly.

We did have truffle pizza last night, courtesy of a truffle Peg sniffed out at Ashburton earlier in the week. Not yet perfected the technique, but they were good. Wood-fired ovens take a long time to heat up in the middle of winter...

Jeff: the dog is Peg. And she is "beyond cute"...

Great review. You're lucky to have the land to grow your own truffles. Reading the book made me want to go out and start my own truffière.
